Search Engine Optimization for Realtors often feels like dark magic performed with a keyboard. But in truth there’s a process and given enough effort anything is possible.

We’re going to examine the basic concepts in this article.

What do Search Engines look for?

Keep in mind this a basic starter article and that Google owns a lot of patents that describe how the specific algorithm works. So we’re concentrating on the most important elements. We’re going to break this down into two pieces.

1. On-site optimization – Things you do on your site which help the Search Engines understand what your site is about.

2. Off-site optimization – Things which are not part of your site such as links from other websites.

Let’s begin with On-site Optimization.

There’s one general rule I use here. If a person can see it, Google will use it to help decide what to rank your site for. So that includes the text on your website, pictures on the site and the Title Tag.

Let’s discuss the title tag. The Title Tag is a little piece of html code inserted just after the header tag. It looks like this (title)The title of your site(/title). You can see what a title tag is saying about a site by looking at the very top of your browser, directly above the File Edit View menus. This is perhaps the most important item on your site to optimize. Google uses this tag in the search engine results to describe your site and as such puts a lot importance on it when deciding what your site should rank for. So if your site is about Belleville Car Sales then your title tag may read, (title)Belleville Car Sales(/title).

When Google reads a title tag like (title)Belleville Care Sales(/title)what do you think it will think your site is about? That’s right “Belleville Car Sales”. Google does the same with the rest of the site, but the title tag is perhaps the most important piece of the puzzle and for most local Realtors it may be the only thing you need to concentrate on when changing something on your website.

Let’s move to Off-site optimization.

Again this is not as complicated as many people think it is. Think of trying to rank high in Google like a popularity contest. The person with the most votes and most important votes win. Ranking highly in the Search Engines is the same process. You need to have a lot of websites link to you, and the more important those sites are the better it is for you. What that means is that a link from the New York Times is better than your cousin’s dog’s facebook page.

Links from sites that are relevant to yours are better as well. A real estate focused site linking to a Realtor makes sense and helps Google understand you should rank for Real Estate related terms. So can you guess what the best link would be? Yep, a topic related link from a highly authoritative site. For a Realtor that would be a link from a site like RealEstate.com

The next piece to linking is something called the anchor text. Anchor text is the text you see in blue while reading a link. Your anchor text needs to be keyword focused. The more sites that use the anchor text, means more votes for you to rank high for that keyword phrase.

That’s it! Rinse and repeat, get more links from related sites, the more links you get the higher you will rank.

The reality is most human beings do not see how many things they are good at. Few people in the world have nothing to offer in terms of knowledge.

If you want to get started immediatley then you need to find a website builder that gives you the tools you need to make money. You have a lot of options when choosing which one you want.

I own five websites and have built them all with different software. I can tell you which ones produce the best results and that is definitely not any of the free versions.

You will want to be especially careful when coming across the free version. It is so much harder to build income with those since they provide you with few marketing tools.

In many cases a company will have a free and a paid version. The only thing the free version can help out with is deciding if you would like their paid version.

Once you try the free version you start to get a feel for how bad these services are. This is why you should not use free site builders or upgrade to one of their paid versions.

The best thing to go with a all in one package or website builder. There are few of these builders available.

The site builders that are out there give you great odds to make money online. The key is learning how the internet works.

The first thing you will want to start doing is writing content. Create a site map then start writing organized content.

There is a lot that goes into writing content so I am not going to get into that subject. However, if you are an expert in the niche you choose you should have no problem writing quality content.

It should take you around a month to build about one hundred pages. You need to write all your content before trying to build traffic.

When you complete enough pages then it is time to start attracting visitors.

Perhaps the hardest part of the entire process is the traffic building step.

There is many different types of traffic. There is search engine traffic, type in traffic, return visitors, and traffic from external sources.

It is important to know which type of traffic is the best. All types of traffic are not equal in terms of the money they make you.

After you test out the different forms of traffic you will find which type is most profitable. Then you keep attempting to target that traffic to produce royalties.

The best type of traffic to attract is search engine traffic. Not only is it the most targeted traffic, but it is completely free of charge.

This way all the money you make is yours. There is little to no expense with this method.

The real way to product search traffic is through building backlinks to your website. This will raise your rankings in the major search engines.

Anchor text is a term you hear alot in the SEO community. It is the text that you click on and is the top priority in determining search rankings.

That is a very basic over view on how obtaining traffic works. That is all I am going to say about that.

The final part of the process is making money off that traffic you generate for your website. This is the easiest part of the process.

After you learn how to build a website you can earn money off of it several different ways. The easiest way in my opinion is Google Adsense.

Once you sign up for a free Google account you can place ads on your website. Google will give you a snippet of code to place on your web pages where you want the ads to be shown.

Adsense is such an ideal method for building income from a website because all the money you make is residual.

When you built thousands of web pages you can basically quit all together. You will be able to do this eventually because you will earn residual income from all the pages you have ever built for the rest of your life.

There are several methods to make money on the internet. You first need to learn how to construct a website before you can grasp the power of passive income.

About Paid Links

There is an interesting post by Gab Goldenberg on Search Engine Journal that looks at 101 tips for buying text link ads. I know many web owners have considered buying links as part of link building strategies but have steered away for fear of possible search penalties. It does raise a question as to whether they are worth the time and effort that goes into acquiring and managing these links.

The post calls them text link ads and they are – they are also simply paid links, a practice that Google frowns heavily upon. However, there is one statement that is worth thinking about:

One thing I tried to demonstrate in this article is that you can take virtually every organic link building technique and achieve the same thing with money.

It is a very true statement. I won’t go into the rights and wrongs of paid links, you can make your own mind up about that issue. Creating an organic link is not difficult. For the site creating the link, it’s a moment’s work. The difficult part is in finding those who have the pages that you need links from. In the past, link farms have worked on the basis of link quantity over quality – these days quality is more important than quantity although they both have their places.

Let’s look at one example of an organic link that could be bought. One of the best links you can obtain is through a quote. This is where a portion of text is reprinted with a link back to the originating site (as I have done above). The question now is how much are you willing to pay to have someone quote you? Twenty pounds, thirty, forty? Of course it depends on the site linking to you but even at “20 for a PR4 or PR5 site, are you getting value for money? The second question is how many of these links do you need – 30,40,50? If you were to buy 50 of these links the total cost is “1000. Could that money be better spent elsewhere?

I think it can. For “1000 you could probably buy 50-100 well written articles which could be submitted to article directories or used as guest posts. I am sure with that sort of strategy you could end up with far more than just 50 inbound links – and they are all legitimate links! What are your thoughts, are paid links value for money?
